History of the North Central District
In 1958 the Negro Business and Professional Association's district concept was implemented across the Nation. States were grouped Into districts starting with the Southeast District in 1958; Northeast in 1959; South Central in 1963; and the North Central, Western, and Mid-Atlantic in 1965. Alberta Davis of Detroit, Michigan was the first North Central District Governor. Since its inception, the North Central District NCD has had a strong presence in the Association, with its Clubs receiving numerous awards and recognitions. The NCD has hosted 13 of 81 National Conventions. The District is recognized as an Irs 501(C)(3) organization and qualifies for tax-deductible contributions from supporters.
By 1964 the district began to define their functions in the following:
-
As a liaison between Association and the local club.
-
As a coordinating influence among the clubs in matters of program, finance, management, public relations, and other aspects permanent to the Organization.
-
As a resource in clearing house for exchange of information, ideas and experiences among the clubs next line as a form for discussion of problems, ideas, and techniques on a regular basis.
-
Developing District Conferences as an Institute for increasing the effectiveness of Club functioning by convening and annual conference.
The purposes of the district programs were to:
-
Provide individual members an opportunity to learn about our history, policies, procedures, and problems, all of which have an impact on Club operations.
-
Provide an opportunity to develop experience and leadership skills.
-
Provide special attention to the day-to-day operations, which are important to every Club.
-
Provide an opportunity to present distinguished members of the association from other areas to the local community and thereby enhance prestige and project a positive image; from every section of the country and representing every phase of business and the professions.
